Celebrating International Day of the Girl Child

Celebrating International Day of the Girl Child

Today, the world is celebrating the International Day of the Girl Child also called ‘The Day of the Girl’ October 11 2016.United Nations led initiative supporting the more than 1.1 billion girls worldwide who are a powerful force for economic growth and shaping a sustainable world. The observation supports more opportunity for girls and increases awareness of gender inequality faced by girls worldwide based upon their gender. This inequality includes areas such as access to education, nutrition, legal rights, medical care, and protection from discrimination, child marriage and violence against women.

The idea for an international day of the Girl Child observance was formally proposed as a resolution by Canada in the United Nations General Assembly and grew out of Plan International’s Because I Am a Girl campaign, which raises awareness of the importance of nurturing girls globally and in developing countries in particular.

This year the theme is “Girls’ Progress = Goals’ Progress: A Global Girl Data Movement”, calling for action on increasing the availability and analysis of girl-focused and sex-disaggregated data.

Our country needs women and girls to participate fully in the social, economic and political life of their communities. Progress in gender equality is not only about rights, it is smart economics. Today we have women Prime Minister, President, Entrepreneur, astronauts and the list goes on. Just think about our women and girls, they can make our country a beautiful place to live in. With education and bundle of opportunities they can explore the world, lift their family and can pursue the career she chooses. Just take an initiative to protect them from sexual exploitation all those ill practices which still persists in our country.

On this auspicious day of Dussehra, lets burn all the evils that exists in our society for our Girls. Save Girls, Educating a single girl means bringing an educated family in the society….
