Celebrating International Day of the Girl Child

Today, the world is celebrating the International Day of the Girl Child also called ‘The Day of the Girl’ October 11 2016.United Nations led initiative supporting the more than 1.1 billion girls worldwide who are a powerful force for economic growth and shaping a sustainable world. The observation supports more opportunity for girls and increases awareness of gender inequality faced by girls worldwide based upon their gender. This inequality includes areas such as access to education, nutrition, legal rights, medical care, and protection from discrimination, child marriage and violence against women.

The idea for an international day of the Girl Child observance was formally proposed as a resolution by Canada in the United Nations General Assembly and grew out of Plan International’s Because I Am a Girl campaign, which raises awareness of the importance of nurturing girls globally and in developing countries in particular.

This year the theme is “Girls’ Progress = Goals’ Progress: A Global Girl Data Movement”, calling for action on increasing the availability and analysis of girl-focused and sex-disaggregated data.
